A while back I'd had this crazy thought of trying to start building an online community for people to share MT Flash applications. I was becoming kind of frustrated that there was no real one location I could start uploading apps to, to share with everyone that wasn't just my own website. A place where a whole group, or everyone, upload apps to use, to build off of, to experiment with.
So I shot out a message to the NUIGroup really quick saying I was thinking about doing something like this. Moments later, Message. NUIGroup user Seth Sandler told me there was actually a group of them already thinking about something like that... and not just Flash, but for everything! Flash, python, processing, frameworks, applications, projects... Everything related to the new types of user interfaces and the software to run them.
First thought, I need to be a part of this! I was totally there, everyone who had already got together were pretty much Everyone I had respected from the NUIGroup. All the users I had hoped to one day work with! Amazing.
So I gladly helped out any way I can, but the real leader pulling it all together, Seth, my hats off to you man. I'm really excited to see how the site grows and evolves. So anyone visiting my site, and reading this, become a member! Get inspired, get Sparked!

I plan on getting as many apps as I can up there for all to use. I have some there now:
- Cats Cradle
- Tokyo Game Show Demo
- Mini-Keyboard Widget
I better get into gear too, I don't want to start dropping to far down the top users list

While I was moving to a new home, I was approached by Rishi Bedi from the NUIGroup as they were just about to finish up putting together the first draft of their community book project. They were running out of time and needed something for the Actionscript 3 section of the book. I was pleased to help out in any way I can.
So as quick as I could, I wrote up a little Actionscript history lesson, How Flash communicates with tracking software via FLOSC, and building your first app to get your TUIO communication started.
Admittedly, there has been major changes since the section was first written. CCV now communicates directly with Flash, returnBlobs() has been added into TUIO.as so you no longer need to add that yourself.
Every author in the book has done an excellent job and I'm proud to be a part of such a brilliant community. I'm looking forward to finding the time to read up on every section.

Thinking about it, I haven't put up any experiments lately. I don't think I've been following a pattern and I don't know if anyone is anticipating anything, but I just want to take this opportunity to mention the reason behind my current lack of posting. I just purchased a new home, and I've been moving everything I have from point A to point B. I didn't plan enough ahead to really pack thoroughly or even make a plan of attack. I haven't even gotten my MT table to the new place yet, it's a proof of concept so it's not really the smallest build out there. So by the end of the day, I'm just out of multi-tasking power.
But that doesn't mean that I haven't done anything multi-touch related. Members of the NUI Group have approached me to add to the book they are putting together to be distributed at IDC 2009. Something I would love to go to, unfortunetly it's just not in the cards right now. What section will I be helping with? Flash Actionscript 3.0 for Multi-touch, who would have guessed huh? (^_^)//
They are doing some final editing so I'm not sure if they'll be pulling out anything I wrote, but a quick synopsis is; A brief history of Flash and Actionscript, the need for FLOSC, Making Your First AS and FLA file, Adding in TUIO communication (including function adding: TUIO.returnBlobs() + TUIO.returnBlobs()[i].getID()), and 2 quick apps.
If you are fortunate enough to make it to IDC 2009, try to find the NUI Group.
What they are putting together is going to be one word: Awesome!

There are just so many things to think about and talk about when it comes to multi-touch, it's hard for me to know what to write a post about. So there's something I just want to put out there. I've never taken part in such a great community of people. NUI Group.
Thanks to everyone there, I was able to get my initial proof of concept off the ground. I have a working FTIR table to really start testing out apps. So I'd say that 1/4 off the battle is won. But there it still much more ground to cover. Read the rest of this entry »
