I do enjoy getting to be a part of the Collider Exhibit Series at the University of Akron. It give me a great opportunity to meet some great artists and everyone involved in putting it together. Getting to talk about 'new media' and it's impact on anything and everything. Admittedly, I'm not much of a conversationalist as much as I am more of a sponge and just tries to take in everything. But, yea... Vision[type]

The theme of the show was Transformation. And being kinda focused on vision based interaction, I wanted to build my piece around what it is a computer sees. So using a webcam, I have the computer taking pictures of the users. The piece then takes that picture and changes the image first into grey scale and second into ASCII character, transforming the image we understand into a representation of what the computer sees.

The image was them immediately uploaded to a tumblr account: http://visiontype.tumblr.com/ A QR code was then generated, linking to that image as well. And all of the ASCII characters generated by the piece was stored into a database.
Using the stored ASCII characters, on the windows opposite the computer and webcam, was a dual projection.

The screen clears to white and one of the ASCII images is selected from the database at random. The image is applied to the white and the characters begin to stream across the projection, one line of characters at a time. Over time, the color left behind from the streaming ASCII characters seeps into the image hidden in the white screen. After a while, the image is visible in the screens, but after too long the colors overpower the image and the image becomes too dark to recognize. Once the projection has gone through all of the characters in the image, the screen clears to white again and the process restarts.
