I came across a nice article tonight. A review on The Rapture, that Cleveland Indie film I worked on about a year and a half ago. I was listed on the credits as visual effects supervisor, even got a listing on IMDB because of it. I only had to supervise on aspect of the project though, Mideal's wings. I got enlisted to work on them very very late in the game, in fact they wings were one of the last pieces they were trying to wrap up. With the help of another 3D animation, Brad Ditmars, we hammered out all the scenes. I've been interested in seeing some reviews of the movie, and seeing is any reviewers mention anything about the wings, all those long nights and weekends, trying to make it look just right...
Looks like it may have paid off, at least in the kudos sense. You can still read the article if you'd like, but I'll pull out the good parts for you:
...they ended up doing digital ones, you can see that if there was a more solid HD workflow and more of a budget/ time to work with, the wings would have been really perfect.....but here's the best part....these were pretty sweet, especially for indie. What production can say they had flapping and folding 3D wings, let alone in combination with wire work on the actor?
...the wings were a step above the norm.
Visual Effects were cool to work on and all, but I have a new passion to focus on now, multi-touch. I do know Johnny Wu is gonna show his next movie at IngenuityFest. So our paths may cross again and I could be pulled into the work of visual effects once again.
