Saturday’s Plan – Cam upgrade and Endurance Test

Dissecting the PS3eye Early to rise this morning, and a few things I'm trying to accomplish today. Two nights ago I made the switch from using the xbox live camera to the PS3. And I can not tell you how happy it has made me in the end! After learning which setting work the best with my computer (so far its 320x240 at 60fps).

Came across another website post, Pimp my Cam. Swapping out the PS3 lens for another lens which can hold a wide-angle security lens. Brilliant. So now I have the lens on order and I should have it this week sometime. But what to do till then. I'm exremely happy with the performance of the PS3 cam, but I have the xBox setup in the table. I couldn't wait, I needed to switch the camera and try first hand. I immediatly understood the use of the wide-angle lens, to get all of the screen in view the camera has to be put completely at the bottom of the box, I even needed to switch to a small mirror to help it fit. But it works great. Some temporary duct tape and I'm good to test.

Dissecting the PS3eye The only thing I didn't like was the quality after adding the bandpass filter. Very very fuzzy, and there was no way to focus the PS3 lens, just a slight zoom switch. So looking back at the Pimp my Cam post I noticed that lens mount looked a LOT like the mount in the Xbox live cam. Dissecting the PS3eyeA lot a lot. So what the heck, let me see if they are the same size. And low and behold they are! So a little frankenstien action and the lenses are swapped. The little taped piece in the front is the band pass filter taped down with a little electrical tape.

Endurance Test

With the new CCV released, the new cam upgrade and an upcoming weekend long event I need to get ready for with my MT table. I definitely need to do an endurance test of my setup. But not wanting to burn out my projector, I've hooked in a monitor (never going to sleep mode) and I'm going to leave the table running, with FluidSolver up and playable all day. We shall see how it works out. It's been about 30 min now, and nothing has locked up yet; CCV or Fluidsolver. Every so often I'll go over and swipe the table to make sure it is still running.

And the results

endurancetest

CCV worked brilliantly! No errors in blob tracking and output. No freezing. No performance hinderance of any kinds.

Flash -- good, but not as flawless. So I'm at least feeling 60% comfortable with Inginuity Fest right around the corner.

I didn't run the app I'm going to use, I still don't have that finally complete. But testing anything, I was sure I'd be able to pull some kind of data.  The one take away I learned is that full screen mode is what was buggy. I ran fluidSolver, it was working great and then I'd let it just sit there. After about 25-30 minutes the screen would stop responding. I'd swipe at it, expecting to see the spread of colors, but nothing. So I took it off of fullscreen, and low and behold, the screen was reactive again. And not just reactive, everything I did before leaving fullscreen view had been applied!

After seeing that happen twice, I decided not to leave it in fullscreen mode. From there after, no screen freezes. It remained reactive after 30min, 1hr, even nearly 3 hrs of inactivity.

Theories:

So here is what I'm thinking. Fullscreen mode may have some type of 'internal screensaver' which will disable display activity after 25-30 min, which can only be deactivated by leaving full screen.

Or, there is a bug in fullscreen. I haven't had a chance to scour the internet of possibilities.

I'm thinking its about time I ran a new test. A touch app, but where the is something moving. Something more like a visual screen saver. At least something that is always in motion. How about that simple 3D cube (Flash 10 needed).

Results Part II

So now the small 3D cube app has been running for nearly 3 hours now. And no issues. One 45 min length of the cube constantly spinning. Another where the cube was completely still the whole time. CCV, once again flawless and smooth at 60 fps 320x240.

My parting advise to you all. Test your apps trying to simulate real-life possibilities.
You may be surprised by them, then you'll have to think of new solutions.

I know this will be at an all day festival, for 3 days, so there is a chance that the table could be unused for a length of time.
But only being there time will tell me that for sure. July 11-13, I'm looking forward to it.

Theorize, experiment and test.
And on that note, happy experimenting.
